This map shows the twelve provinces of the Netherlands with their capital cities. The provinces form the administrative layer between the national government and the local governments. The twelve Dutch provinces are (ordered according to their population):

  • South Holland (capital: The Hague)
  • North Holland (capital: Haarlem)
  • North Brabant (capital: ‘s-Hertogenbosch)
  • Gelderland (capital: Arnhem)
  • Utrecht (capital: Utrecht)
  • Overijssel (capital: Zwolle)
  • Limburg (capital: Maastricht)
  • Friesland (capital: Leeuwarden/Ljouwert)
  • Groningen (capital: Groningen)
  • Drenthe (capital: Assen)
  • Flevoland (capital: Lelystad)
  • Zeeland (capital: Middelburg)

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, but the primary national political institutions are located in The Hague.
