About the Norwegian language
Norwegian is a North Germanic language spoken by about 5 million people in Norway, where it is an official language. There are two official forms of written Norwegian, Bokmål and Nynorsk. Bokmål (literally ‘book tongue’) is the preferred written standard for about 85% of the Norwegian population. It is closely related to written Danish. Nynorsk (literally ‘new Norwegian’) is the preferred written standard for about 15% of the population. It is mainly based on western rural dialects. The spoken language in Norway has quite large regional differences.
