About the Icelandic language
Icelandic is a North Germanic language spoken by about 300.000 people in Iceland, where it is the official language. It is most closely related to Faroese and western Norwegian dialects.
Icelandic is more conservative than most Germanic languages. The language regulator prefers to base new terms on older Icelandic words rather than directly taking in loanwords from other languages. In addition, Icelandic has quite complex grammar due to, among other things, the cases and the irregular declensions. Since the written language has not evolved that much over the centuries, Icelanders can understand Old Norse texts relatively easily.
