This map shows the 48 ceremonial counties of England. Ceremonial counties are areas defined for the purposes of the lieutenancies, relating to the appointment of lord-lieutenants, the monarch’s representatives in each county. Their boundaries are generally the same as those of the shrieval counties, which are used for appointing high sheriffs, the monarch’s judicial representatives. Each ceremonial county consists of one or more local government areas. Unlike counties used for local government purposes, ceremonial counties have no administrative role and serve primarily as symbolic units representing the Crown.

Below is a list of the 48 counties, along with their composition (metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties, including unitary authority areas):
