Iceland map: regions with largest towns

This map shows the eight regions of Iceland and their largest towns. These regions are commonly used for statistical, geographical and administrative reference, although Iceland is governed primarily through municipalities and the national government rather than a strong regional tier.

The map highlights how Iceland’s population is concentrated in the southwest around the capital area, while the rest of the country is more sparsely populated, with towns mainly located along the coast or in fertile lowland areas. Several regional centres, such as Akureyri, Selfoss and Egilsstaðir, serve as important hubs for transport, services and tourism outside Reykjavík.

Below are the regions in alphabetical order by Icelandic name, with the English name and largest town included:

  • Austurland (English: Eastern Region; largest town: Egilsstaðir)
  • Höfuðborgarsvæðið (English: Capital Region; largest town: Reykjavík)
  • Norðurland eystra (English: Northeastern Region; largest town: Akureyri)
  • Norðurland vestra (English: Northwestern Region; largest town: Sauðárkrókur)
  • Suðurland (English: Southern Region; largest town: Selfoss)
  • Suðurnes (English: Southern Peninsula; largest town: Reykjanesbær)
  • Vestfirðir (English: Westfjords; largest town: Ísafjörður)
  • Vesturland (English: Western Region; largest town: Akranes)

The capital of Iceland is Reykjavík.
