Europe map: NATO member states with years of accession
This map shows the 32 member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with the years of accession. NATO is an intergovernmental military alliance established in 1949 (in the aftermath of World War II) with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty. The primary goal of NATO is collective security, as set out in the well-known Article 5 of the treaty: “an armed attack against one member shall be considered an attack against them all”.
Of the 32 member states, 30 are in Europe and two are in North America. The timeline of each country’s accession can be found below:
