Major empires (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, the Ottoman Empire and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland) are highlighted, alongside independent states and semi-autonomous territories. Microstates and protectorates, such as Monaco, Andorra and Iceland, are indicated, with annotations highlighting special statuses where relevant.
